Nemo propheta in patria, si suol dire, ed è questo forse il caso di Sergio Larrain.

Primo Cileno ad entrare in Magnum, ma soprattutto fotografo che fondeva istinto e un gusto innato per la composizione in immagini di strada strepitose - astratte e teatrali insieme - Larrain ha sempre goduto di maggior fama all'estero, più che nella sua terra d'origine.

Cartier-Bresson si innamorò delle sue immagini e lo portò in Magnum nel 1960, e alla stessa maniera se ne innamorarono Cortazar e Bolaño, il quale in maniera immaginifica ne descrisse lo sguardo come uno “specchio arborescente”.

Conservati negli archivi parigini di Magnum, gli scatti di Larrain tornano idealmente a casa con questa grande retrospettiva itinerante, inaugurata al Museo Nazionale delle Belle Arti di Santiago, che successivamente verrà allestita a Concepción e Punta Arenas.

They say Nemo propheta in patria - and perhaps that’s just the case with Sergio Larrain.

The first Chilean ever to enter Magnum, he was (most notably) a photographer who merged together instinct and the innate taste for composition of stunning street photos - both abstract and theatrical. He always enjoyed greater success abroad than in his home-country.

Cartier-Bresson fell in love with his photographs and brought him to Magnum in 1960. Similarly, also Cortazar and Bolaño fell for him - the latter imaginatively describing Larrain's gaze as an “arborescent mirror”.

Kept in the Parisian archives of Magnum, Larrain’s shots ideally return home with this massive itinerant retrospective - which opened at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, and will head to Concepción and Punta Arenas next.
